The French Renault Sport team with Jean-Pierre Jabouille and Patrick Depailler at the wheel of the Renault Alpine A443 n.1 did not finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1978, which commanded the race for eighteen hours but was forced to retire due to engine problems. The race won by Didier Pironi and Jean Pierre Jaussand with the Renault Alpine A442B n.2. In second arrived the Porsche 936-78 n.6 of the Martini Racing Porsche System team of Bob Wollek, Jurgen Barth, Jacky Ickx with a gap of five laps and the Porsche 936-77 n.7 of Hurley Haywood, Peter Gregg and Reinhold Joest spaced seven laps.
