Description
BRABHAM – FORD COSWORTH BT49 n.5
HISTORY
The Brabham – Ford Cosworth BT49 is a car that participated in the Formula 1 World Championship in 1980. The English team designed the new car already at the end of the 1979 season and derived from the Brabham BT48 which was equipped with the Alfa engine Romeo. In the new season the team changes engines by switching to the smaller but more reliable Ford Cosworth, which gave the possibility to increase the capacity of the tank. Nelson Piquet with the Brabham – Ford Cosworth BT49 n.5 arrived second in the 1980 Formula 1 World Championship, winning three times.
The Brazilian driver during the season fought for the title thanks to three victories in the Grand Prix of the United States, Holland and Italy, but technical problems in the last two races forced him to surrender against the Williams FW07B of Alan Jones who became World Champion. Brabham came third in the constructors’ championship.
