HISTORY
The Ford GT40 is the car that participated at the 24 Hours of Le Mans of 1968. With the change of rules the American manufacturer had to set aside the winning GT40 MK II of 1966 and the GT40 MK IV of 1967, while Enzo Ferrari did not participate in protest to the race with his official cars. The new rules forced Team John Wyer Automotive Engineering to bring the 4.9-liter MK I version with the Gulf sponsor to the race, but foregoing his Ickx driver injured at the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix.
The race was initially scheduled as usual in mid-June but due to the strikes in France was postponed to September.
The Belgian Claude Dubois team with Willy Mairesse and ‘Beurlys’ Jean Blaton at the wheel of the Ford GT40 n.8 did not finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1968 due to accident in the first lap. The race won by Ford GT40 n.9 with with Pedro Rodriguez and Lucien Bianchi a five lap gap on the Porsche 907L n.66 of Rico Steinemann and Dieter Spoerry brought in the race by the Swiss private team Squadra Tartaruga, while in third place Porsche 908 n.33 of Rolf Stommelen and Jochen Neerpasch of the official team. For the English team it was the first of his three victories at Le Mans.
