Description
JAGUAR XJR-5 n.44
HISTORY
The Jaguar XJR-5 is a prototype that competed at the Le Mans 24 Hours of 1985. After the last victory of 1957 with the Jaguar D-Type, the Coventry manufacturer entrusted a project for a new return to Le Mans, to the Group 44 Racing which was based in Virginia. The designer Lee Dykstra was commissioned to build the new prototype, starting from the powerful English V12 and creating a chassis that exploits the aerodynamic principles of the underbody. Brian Redman, Doc Bundy and Bob Tullius at the wheel of the Jaguar XJR-5 n.44 did not finish in the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1984 due to the transmission problem after running two hundred and ninety-one laps.
The winner the race was Porsche 956B n.7 with Klaus Ludwig and Henry Pescarolo, in second place the Porsche 956 n.26 with Jean Rondeau and John Paul jr, while in third position the Porsche 956B with David Hobbs, Philippe Streiff and Sarel Van Der Merwe.
The race was conditioned by the death of the race commissioner Jacky Loiseau due to the incident involving John Sheldon’s Nimrod-Aston Martin and Drake Olson’s sister car.
