LOLA T616 – MAZDA n.68

HISTORY

The Lola T616 – Mazda n.68 is a prototype that participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1984. At the beginning of the 1980s the tire manufacturer BF Goodrich won victories in the GT endurance races. For 1984 the BF Goodrich Co team decided to engage in the C2 group category with a prototype designed by Lola. The T616 was derived from the T600 and had a honeycomb frame and a fiberglass-reinforced plastic body. The American team reached an agreement with Mazda for the supply of the engine, a 1300 cc rotary engine with over 300 horsepower.

John Morton, Yoshimi Katayama and John O’Steen at the wheel of the Lola T616 – Mazda n.68 won the Group C2 category at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1984. The threesome, thanks to good reliability, got the tenth place overall with forty laps behind the Porsche 956B n.7 of Henry Pescarolo and Klaus Ludwig taken to the race by Team Joest Racing winner of the race.
The team’s second car crossed the line in twelfth place with Jim Busby, Boy Hayie, Rick Knoop.
