HISTORY

The McLaren – Ford Cosworth M19A is a car that participated in the Formula 1 World Championship in 1972. The British team founded by Bruce McLaren, still had not won a victory in Formula 1. With the designer Gordon Coppuck occupied in the creation of the McLaren M16 for Indianapolis, in 1971 the design of the new car was entrusted to Ralf Bellamy, who designed the car around the extremely reliable Ford Cosworth engine and the Hewland gearbox.

Denny Hulme with McLaren – Ford Cosworth M19A won the 1972 South African Grand Prix, the first success of the team McLaren. In the 1971 season the best result was a third place for the New Zealand rider, the following season he immediately started with the second place in Argentina, and in the the next race in South Africa came the first success of the team with Hulme, and team-mate Peter Revson came in second place. With five more podiums in the season, the New Zealand world champion finished third in the world championship riders won by Emerson Fittipaldi with the Lotus 72, while McLaren took third place in the constructors’ championship.
