HISTORY

The McLaren – Honda MP4/5 raced in the Formula 1 World Championship in 1989. The abolition of the turbo engines forced the teams to mount aspirated engines with a displacement of 3500 cc, Honda decided to build a 10-cylinder, while aerodynamically modified substantial from the previous McLaren MP4/4, they were above all on the rear, with the adoption of the air-scope over the pilot’s head to increase the pressure to the engine increasing its power.

Ayrton Senna with the McLaren – Honda MP4/5 n.1 finished second at the Formula 1 World Champion 1989 with six victories. The teammate Alain Prost won his third world title with the McLaren – Honda MP4/5 n.2.

The challenge was a battle for the whole year and had its epilogue to the GP of Japanese. Senna did not take advantage of the position at the start and was overtaken by the frenchman. The brazilian driver tried for the entire race to overtake the teammate, a few laps from the end he tried to overtake the last chicane, Prost spontaneously hit Senna and both ended off the track. Senna managed to start again and after replacing the damaged front wing he reassembled Alessandro Nannini and won the race, but could not celebrate on the podium because he was disqualified for cutting the chicane. The decision was very political and Senna also threatened the withdrawal.
McLaren also won the constructors title.
