HISTORY

The Williams – Renault FW18 is the dominant car of the Formula 1 World Championship in 1996. Born from the mind of Adrian Newey the FW18 was an update of the FW17B that competed in 1995. The partnership with Renault, the best engine of the era, completed an aerodynamically exceptional car.

The British Rothmans Williams Renault team with Damon Hill at the wheel of the Williams – Renault FW18 n.5 won the Formula 1 World Championship 1996. During the season the British driver won 8 grand prix: GP Australia, GP Brazil, GP Argentina, San Marino GP, GP Canada, GP France, GP Germany and GP Japan. At the start of the season the transfer of Schumacher to Ferrari, weakened the Benetton, while the Maranello house was still struggling with reliability issues. Williams hired Canadian driver, son of art Jacques Villeneuve, the latter was the only one to stand up to his team-mate but despite the four seasonal victories proved to be still premature for the victory of the world title. The English team also won the constructors’ title thanks to 12 victories out of 16 races.
